What to Wear | Couples Guide

Frequently I get asked “what should we wear for our engagement session?” I’ve answered my most commonly asked question below.

PATTERN 101:

If one person is wearing a pattern the other should stick to solid colours. Try to incorporate neutrals, so it’s not a bunch of competing colours.

Pattern Example:  I love how Jessica’s dress stands out. The pattern doesn’t compete with Brenden’s neutral outfit.

Colours 101:

If one person is wearing a colour, the other person should try to incorporate a neutral or soft muted sister shade.

Tone down bright colours, they tend to steal the show. They also can cast colour up onto your face.

Dark colours are amazing, they are super flattering and keep the focus on your faces.

This is a really nice example of a sister shade. Jordan’s top is in the same colour family as Rebecca’s dress, but it is NOT the exact same colour. When they are wrapped in each other’s arms there will be enough contrast in colour to make their clothing pop against each other.
I love this outfit. Jeremy is wearing all the neutral colours and Ashley is wearing the “statement” colour. I like this combination because Ashley’s “colour” is quite similar to Jeremy’s neutral pants.

DO NOT wear the exact same colour as your partner. The lack of contrast makes it looks like you and your partner are one person, not two individuals.

Textures 101:

Try to incorporate a variety of textures, this can be done with  a scarf, a leather jacket, a fuzzy sweater, denim, lace or simply wearing a different type of fabric than your partner. Don’t be scared of sheer lace, it photographs beautifully!!

Texture Sample: I love how the texture of Bree’s yellow sweater stands out and adds dimension.

Accessories 101:

I recommend that ball caps are NOT worn. The large brim on these type of hats take away from my ability to create photographs of an intimate nature. That being said, I do enjoy a good “Indiana Jones” hat that can be taken on and off without wrecking hair.

Accessories that work:

  • Indiana Jones hats (the smaller brim just works!)
  • Scarves
  • Subtle Jewellery – I love a good set of assorted rings.
  • Cozy Blankets/Serape blankets
  • Don’t be afraid to showcase your tattoos

Things to avoid:

  • Logos
  • Baseball caps

DON’T FORGET TO WEAR COMFORTABLE CLOTHES, SO YOU CAN HAVE FUN!!
