How to change your last name in Saskatchewan

Chances are if you’re reading this you are newly married! CONGRATULATIONS! Changing your last name should be a straight forward process but it had me scratching my head the entire time.  Here is a step-by-step guide on how to change your last name in Saskatchewan.

HONEYMOON: If you are planning to go on your honeymoon immediately after your wedding. Book the trip under your maiden name and deal with changing your name after you return.

STEP 1: Order a marriage certificate online by clicking here. You will need your marriage registration number in order to do this. The certificate should arrive in the mail after a couple weeks.

STEP 2: Go into SGI and get a NEW ID. IF your officiant gave you a certificate the day of your wedding, this should work to get you a drivers license with your new name. IF not, you’ll have to wait until the certificate you ordered online comes in. Bring in your marriage certificate and old ID. They will take a new photograph of you and your card will arrive in the mail after 10ish days.

STEP 3: Go into the Service Canada Office located within the Market Mall in Saskatoon to update your SIN. Bring your Birth Certificate, Marriage License and SIN card. OPEN 8:30 am – 4 pm Monday thru Friday.

STEP 4: Update your information with CRA. Call 1-800-959-8281 to advise of your last name change. They will ask you for your social insurance number and some information that is only found within your previous personal tax returns. You will also need to update your marital status with them. You will need your husband’s social insurance number to do so.

Your husband will also have to call into this number and update his marital status. He will need to know your social insurance number in order to do so.

STEP 5: Update your Health Card by calling 306 787 3251.

STEP 6: Update your banking information. Set up an appointment at your local bank and bring in your marriage certificate.

STEP 7: Update your Canadian Passport. You’ll need to fill out the Adult General Passport Application, you can find it here. Go into the Federal Building on 101 22 St E Saskatoon (It’s right across the street from The Bay.). Bring your Birth Certificate, Marriage Certificate, ID with your married name, and your old passport, General Passport Application Form, New passport photo.  Passport takes about 2 weeks to arrive.

STEP 8: Update your phone bill, power bill, cable bill, health/life insurance, etc. with your new name.

STEP 9:  Put your feet up, pour your self a big glass of wine and congratulate yourself on completing your name change!
